An anal fistula is a thin, narrow tunnel with an opening along the inside of the anal canal, and has another opening externally in the tissue around the anus.
Typically an anal fistula is caused by an infection condition known as an anal abscess. Surgery will ward off such side effects of infection to heal and reduce symptoms, which include discharge of drainage (pus) or bleeding from the anus.
