Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a problem that can affect the large intestine. This type of condition can cause abdominal cramping, bloating, and a change in bowel habits. Changes in the bowels such as constipation, diarrhea, or often both, are usually present. Although IBS can cause great discomfort, it does not harm the intestine, and there is no associated increase in colon cancer. Colonoscopy often plays an important role in diagnosis by excluding other possibilities such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Feeling like you haven't finished a bowel movement (incomplete emptying)
  • Diarrhea
  • Sudden, unpredictable urge to have a bowel movement (urgency)

Treatment Options:

Treatment options for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) take the form of changes to your diet, medications, relieving stress, or behavioral therapy. It may require a few of these approaches at the same time to improve your symptoms.
